Choosing A Bed For Your Bedroom

Think of the bed as the sofa of the bedroom – the most important furnishing in the room by a country mile. Many people overlook the bed when decorating the bedroom because changing a bed can be a lot more hassle than simply adding or removing a chest of drawers or wardrobe. However, changing the bed can instantly transform the atmosphere of the bedroom and it should never be overlooked in a serious bedroom redesign.

There are many different types of bed, ranging from the simplest designs, which are often little more than a raised platform with a mattress but no springs, to the most elaborate, which can include four-poster luxury and even special bed-curtains to create a special sense of intimacy. Which bed you choose should depend on many things, including the overall look and feel of your home, as well as the person (or people) who will sleep in it.

Instead of buying the first bed you see, take the time to flick lazily through furniture catalogues or looking at furniture online , compiling a shortlist of your favourite designs. If you’re going to be sharing the bed, ask your other half to do the same, then get together and compare notes – do you both have the same idea? If so, it looks like you might be onto a winner. If not, talk about your different visions and see if there is a compromise to be found.

As a general rule, steer clear of large four-poster beds if your bedroom is small, and avoid those without headrests if the room is large. It is important to find the right balance between open space and intimacy or you might feel like you sleep in a warehouse or a cardboard box. Whether you have the budget for stylish designer beds or not, don’t rush into a decision and you are sure to find something that fits your vision beautifully.
